Staff Spotlight: Josh Vouris, Business Development Manager

In our latest staff Q&A, we find out about Josh Vouris, Business Development Manager.

Which team do you support, and how did that connection start?
I’m a lifelong supporter of the South Sydney Rabbitohs. My dad was born in Redfern, right in the heartland of the club, and my whole extended family supports them. I’ve been a member since birth.

Have you ever travelled far or done something wild to watch a game?
In 2024, I flew from London to Las Vegas to watch the first-ever NRL season opener in Vegas and to see my team play. Worth every mile.

What’s the most emotional match or moment you’ve experienced as a fan?
The 2014 Grand Final. Souths won the premiership for the first time in 44 years, since 1971 when my old man was just 11. Watching it together made it even more special.

If you could attend any past sporting event, which would it be?
The 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. From everything I’ve heard, the atmosphere around the city was incredible and it sounded like a once-in-a-generation event.

Have you ever played sport competitively? If so, what did it teach you about performance, pressure, or teamwork?
Yes, I played Rugby, Soccer, Basketball, Athletics, Cross Country and I still play OzTag on Thursdays. One thing it taught me is not to dwell on mistakes. If you slip up, you can’t let it take you out of the game. You must reset and focus on the next play.

What’s your favourite sports tournament and why?
The Melbourne Cup. My birthday is on the 3rd of November, so it often falls on or near Cup Day. I’ve picked the winner four times and had a streak of three in a row until last year broke the run.

Is there a sports manager or coach whose leadership style you admire?
Wayne Bennett. He’s not a hype man or someone who needs the spotlight, but the way he earns respect and brings out the best in his players says it all. He’s got a calm presence and just knows how to manage people, which I think is a massive part of leadership.

What’s a sporting moment that gave you goosebumps?
On 2 November, Verry Elleegant won the 2021 Melbourne Cup, ridden by James McDonald. She was my favourite horse and I was at Royal Randwick that day watching the race on the big screen. She went off at around 20/1, and to see her come through and win like that gave me absolute goosebumps.

Is there a rivalry in sport that you find especially compelling? Why?
South Sydney Rabbitohs versus Sydney Roosters is unmatched. Both are foundation clubs from 1908 and have the longest-running rivalry in rugby league. The 2022 Elimination Final, known as Sin Bin Sunday, was unforgettable with seven sin bins and Souths winning 30–14.

How does your current role align with your passion for sport?
I love sport, and I love horse racing. In this role, I’m constantly surrounded by both. It’s the perfect fit for me.

What element of your job makes you feel most connected to the action on the field or track?
As a Business Development Manager, I’m always speaking to people who share a love of racing or sport. Working at a sports and racing data company keeps me immersed in the action.

How do sports moments help connect people across teams and departments?
Sport just cuts through everything, job titles, departments, background. You can be in a meeting, and someone brings up a big game from the weekend and suddenly everyone’s leaning in, laughing, debating. It creates instant common ground and gives people a shared energy to build off.
